How Do I Obtain Capital To Invest In My Business Start Up?

Summary:
You’ll almost certainly need to raise money to start up your company, unless you already have sufficient capital yourself. The typical costs of starting up are in obtaining premises, manufacturing your product if you have one, buying materials, stock or equipment, marketing and fees for external consultancy such as legal help, accountancy etc. Then when you’re off the ground, you’ll need working capital to keep you afloat in the gaps between paying your own invoices and recei...

Then when you’re off the ground, you’ll need working capital to keep you afloat in the gaps between paying your own invoices and receiving payment from customer invoices.

Again, your business plan is essential at this stage of setting up your business. In it you will already have scoped out what your money needs are and how you plan to raise the capital, and you’ll be using it to persuade potential investors and lenders of the benefits of funding your company. Your financial calculations in your business plan therefore need to be thorough and accurate and presented with confidence.

Everyone expects that they’ll be able to stick to their plans and only need to borrow the absolute minimum, but more often than not something unexpected crops up to throw a spanner in the works. It therefore makes good business sense to include a contingency element in the amount you request. It’s better to do that now and have the extra cash as a safeguard than it is to have to return to your lender or investor not far down the line to ask for more money. If it wasn’t in the original plan they are likely to be concerned about your financial ability and your request may be rejected.

How much money should you request? This question worries all start-up business owners. You want to make sure you have enough to keep you going without struggling, but how much will your investors or lenders be prepared to give? Most experts would advise that you should pitch somewhere in the middle – don’t leave yourself short by requesting the minimum, but at the same time don’t be greedy (and lazy) in asking for too much. You want to keep costs to a minimum and invest your money wisely in your company, while still having the security of a little extra for backup if required. What you borrow should give you a realistic challenge for your business but should not be too risky. And back up your calculation with evidence in your business plan – it has to be credible.

People raise money for their company in many different ways, not always from professional business investors or high street banks. How you raise your capital will depend on your business needs and your own circumstances. Here’s some information on various different sources of funding.

Your own money – if you have enough cash to spare, putting up your own money for the business means you don’t have to be in debt to anyone. It will also give you full freedom over the running of your company as you won’t be responsible to any other interested parties. On the other hand, you’re risking a lot personally by investing your own cash and you could lose it all – and not just your business, but perhaps also your home if you obtained the money by taking out a secured loan or increased your mortgage, for example. You should also be aware that personal borrowing rates often have much higher interest repayment rates than business deals.

People you know – if they have anything to spare, family and friends are often more willing to give you cash than external lenders or investors. Again, though, there is a high level of personal risk, both for your family or friends who could lose money, and for you – it can cause relationship tensions. If you do take money from family or friends, treat it as a formal business arrangement as you would with external funding and agree clear terms and conditions. You want to protect both your interests and ensure that there are no misunderstandings.

The bank – high street lenders usually have a variety of different packages and there’s usually something to meet everyone’s requirements. You’ll have to do a sales pitch to get your money though, and depending on financial circumstances you might also be required to find a guarantor or provide some sort of security. Don’t just go to your own bank – look around for a good deal and do your pitch to various lenders. If nothing else, it will give you good practice! If you think you might have more of a chance of obtaining money from your own bank where you already have a strong relationship and good financial history, then don’t put it first on your list of visits – present your case to a few different lenders first to hone your presentation and persuasion skills to a tee! Even if you can’t find a lender to give you money, there is a government programme that may be able to help. The Department of Trade and Industry offers a Small Firms Loan Guarantee, in which it offers three quarters of the borrowing amount to the lender as a security guarantee. In return, you must pay an annual fee (which will be a small percentage of the remaining loan amount) to the Department of Trade and Industry. Up to quarter of a million pounds can be borrowed over a maximum 10-year period.

Outside investors – often referred to as ‘business angels’, private investors are rich professionals, often successful entrepreneurs themselves, who are able to offer a great deal of capital in return for an expected large profit and dividends when the company starts to make money. The advantage of obtaining finance from an investor rather than a lender is that they will not expect any financial returns until your business is turning a profit. Also, as successful business owners themselves, they can be a valuable source of advice to guide you in the right direction with your company. A combination of investment and lending might be a good option. Your business will seem a much more attractive and secure prospect to lenders if you already have a sum of capital to back it up. Investors will no doubt have a level of influence and decision-making power in your company, though. Most will want to be kept informed of what is going on – they will want to protect and develop their investment, of course, so you will have a responsibility to them. Also, when you start to turn a profit, it will be divided among everyone who has invested so you won’t get the full whack. Finally, you’ll need to put forward a very good business case to attract an investor – these are very wise, shrewd and experienced entrepreneurs.

Government schemes – there’s a whole raft of options available to small business owners from the government and local authorities in the form of low-cost loans and grants – in fact far too many to mention here. Your local business enterprise centre, chamber of commerce or local council will be able to advise on what options are available for your type of business. The loans are usually offered at very reasonable rates and grants are of course non-repayable (although competition can be tough). Such incentives are often given to certain types of businesses in certain industries located in certain areas, particularly in areas that are being regenerated and in fields such as science, research or engineering.

In conclusion, the key message is that however you get the money you need for your business, you’ll need a very strong business plan – and you’ll need to practise your skills of presenting to ensure you make a good impression and a convincing case.

The presentation of the document itself is also important. Keep it clean, crisp and sharp. Use a business-like typeface, use colours sparingly and use spreadsheets to create neat graphics. Have someone else look over it for you when it’s done to check for mistakes. Print it on good paper and hold it together in a presentation folder or comb binding.

Don’t just plan to read out your business plan – people can do that for themselves. Turn it into a slick presentation with a strong argument for your case. Write down what you want to say and rehearse it several times – in front of a mirror at first and then to family or friends. Confidence is key and this will come with practice. Ensure that you know the details of your plan inside out, including the figures. You don’t want the facts to trip you up. It’s also a good idea to consider what questions investors or lenders might ask and how you can answer them confidently and convincingly.

How To Get Money Fo A Business Start Up

When you first start a company it's almost a guarantee you need to raise money. Unless of course you have a sufficient amount of capital, then you can focus on other areas. This money pertains to obtaining a business location, manufacturing the product, buying materials, stock and equipment, marketing and advertising, legal help, financial records, and various other parts to owning your own business. Then of course when you get off the ground, you need more money to stay afloat during the infancy stages.

It all revolves around your business plan, which is essential to setting up a company. It will give you an inside look of what your money needs are, and the strategies you will use to raise the capital. It's possible you will use this to persuade potential investors, or even get some type of funding for your company. This means it's important to have your financial calculations in check before you start.

Unfortunately most people believe they can stick to their plans and only borrow the absolute minimum. The only problem is many things will arise when you least expect it, which can cause several issues. So it is in your best interest to include a contingency element in your financial request. If you can do that now and have some safeguard money set up in your original plan, your investors won't be as concerned. However, if this is the move you make later on down the road it's most likely that your request will be rejected.

Are you wondering how much money you should request? It's something that all start up business owners worry about in the beginning. The recommendation here is to meet them somewhere in the middle. You don't want to undercut your own financial needs, but at the same time you don't want to look as though you are too greedy. When you do get your investment money, just make sure you keep your costs to a minimum and invest the money wisely. This will allow you to hold back some for security reasons if you need to stay afloat. The most important thing is that your calculations in the business plan will have to be credible.

We all raise money differently and sometimes not from professional business investors or high street banks. The way you decide to raise capital will depend on your particular circumstances. If you need help, here's some information on a few different sources of funding.

Your Own Money- even though many people won't be able to do this, it's one of the least stressful situations to starting up a business. It means you don't have to worry about owing anyone money, but just making sure the business is successful. When you're not responsible to any other interested parties, you have more freedom over what you can do. On the flip side of things, you're putting up a lot of personal risk. What it comes down to is you could actually lose everything. Keep in mind you may have taken out a secured loan which increased your mortgage and various other parts of your personal life. Plus, personal borrowing rates usually have a much higher interest repayment rate.

People You Know- if you don't have your own money and need to go elsewhere, family and friends are great place to start. Often times they will be more willing to give you money then external lenders or investors. Keep in mind that still involves a high level of personal risk, and added stress to you and your family or friends. The best thing to do is to treat it as a formal business arrangement and make sure the terms and conditions are clear. This way you protect both interests so that there are no misunderstandings between all parties.

The Bank- once you've passed the first few thresholds it's time to consider the bank. If you look at all the high street lenders you can find a variety of different packages in which one of them will meet your needs. Unfortunately, if you take this route you're going to have to provide a sales pitch in order to get your money. Then of course you also have to consider your personal financial circumstances, which may mean you need to provide some sort of security.

Don't Just Go to your Own Bank- even though the first thought is to only go to your bank, it's possible another one will be willing to lend you money. In the beginning just taking this route will give you practice on the routine. The idea here is to go to other banks first if you feel as though you have a strong relationship and get financial history with your own bank. You may think this doesn't make sense, but going elsewhere first will allow you to build a perfect presentation and develop your own persuasive skills for when you do give it to your bank. If things don't go your way, it is possible a government program is out there ready to help you. A great example of this is the Department of Trade and Industry, which offers a Small Firms Guarantee. In this scenario there is a 75% borrowing amount to the lender as a security guarantee. On your side of things you have to pay an annual fee to the Department of Trade and Industry. The cost can be up to a quarter of 1,000,000 pounds over a ten-year period.

Outside Investors- sometimes you have to go to the private investors if you want to build a successful business. These are rich professionals who offer a huge capital for a large profit and dividends when the company begins to make money. The best part about outside investors is that they do not expect money until you start making it. Another important part to outside investors is they can offer viable guidance to push you in the right direction. Sometimes this is a great option for many individuals. Often times businesses taking this route will look much more attractive if you have capital to back it up. Keep in mind though the investors will have a level of influence and decision-making within your company. So even though your company will be protected, you won't have the same kind of freedom like many of the other options above. Plus, when you turn a profit it will be divided amongst everyone who has invested in your company. This means it may take longer for you to actually start earning a personal profit. In order to attract these individuals you have to come up with a good business case to attract them.

Government Schemes- more and more today we hear about all the various government schemes that can help you create capital for your business. You'll find low-cost loans and grants out there, but you eventually have to do your research to find the best places out there. It all starts with your local business enterprise Center, the Chamber of Commerce, or some local council they can give you the advice you need. These loans have reasonable rates, and if you get a grant you won't have to pay it back. Keep in mind these incentives are given to certain types of businesses in more specific areas. Hopefully you can find one that is specifically designed for your business if you take this route.

What it comes down to is that no matter which one you choose you will have to have a very strong business plan. Most importantly, you will have to practice your skills and provide a convincing case to anyone you want to invest in your company.

We recommend keeping it clean, crisp and sharp. It's important to use a business-like typeface, as well as spreadsheets to create appealing graphics. Before you jump into an interview process, we also suggest having someone look it over and check for mistakes. In order to look professional you have to print it on good paper and hold it together through the presentation folder or some sort of binding.

Don't Just Plan to Read Out your Business Plan- one thing to understand is that you have to do more than read your proposal aloud. You want to provide a slick presentation that offers a strong argument for your case. The best way to do this is to write it down and go over it several times in front of a mirror. If you get nervous in front of people, ask family and friends to watch your presentation. Tell them to be a critic so you can polish it up to be perfect when you sit in front of a potential investor. It's all about confidence and in order to get this you have to practice. Once you're able to understand your plan inside and out, which includes the figures, you'll be able to stand tall with your argument. Last but not least, make sure you consider the types of questions you're investors or lenders will ask so that you can be convincing with your answers. If you do all these things you will be able to get the capital you need to fund your new business.

You'll almost certainly need to raise money to start up your company, unless you already have sufficient capital yourself. The typical costs of starting up are in obtaining premises, manufacturing your product if you have one, buying materials, stock or equipment, marketing and fees for external consultancy such as legal help, accountancy etc. Then when you're off the ground, you'll need working capital to keep you afloat in the gaps between paying your own invoices and receiving payment from customer invoices.

Business Startup Loans and Small Business Funding for the Self Employed

By Paul Kopp

New business startup loans and small business funding can be very difficult to acquire unless you find a funding source that will be creative. There are many different ways a home based business can get various types of funding as well.. What most self employed individuals forget is that they may be sitting on untapped credit lines and assets that can help them get the financing necessary for their small business.

Many commercial banks will not even look at the new business startup or small businesses unless they have plenty of money sitting in a bank account, a long business tract record and a fat balance sheet. Unfortunately, most of us may not have much cash laying around. That is why most small businesses are looking for additional capital and need funding sources that will think outside the box and look at many different types of financing to fit their business needs.

Here are just a sampling of the types of small businesses that can get financing:

  • Retail
  • Restaurant
  • Doctors
  • Dentists
  • Lawyers
  • Manufacturing
  • Industrial
  • Wholesale
  • Construction
  • Retail Apparel
  • Service Contracts
  • Contractors
  • Sub Contractors

Even if your business does not fit into the above categories there may be funding for you. In my article; Small Business Funding and Business Startup Loans I explain the many different types of small business financing programs available. There is even a contact form to get additional information for your small business funding needs.

I was amazed at how difficult it was for new business startups to get financing. You either have to give half the business away to private investors or you would have to use your own money and risk everything that you worked so hard to get. However there are sources that will not suck the blood out of your great small business idea.

Some types of financing which are most overlooked or difficult to get:

  • New Business or Startup Loans
  • Equipment Leasing
  • Working Capital
  • Purchase Order Funding
  • Contract Funding
  • Accounts Receivable Factoring
  • Medical and Health Industry Loans
  • Debt Settlement and Restructuring
  • Commercial Mortgages

Bottom Line:

There are many ways for the small business owner to get more working capital, new equipment and extra lines of business credit without tapping into personal lines of credit. You do not always have to have stellar credit either. Do not over look the seen and unseen assets your business already has and the potential for future growth. When you know and understand the types of financing available to you then better business decisions can be made regarding your specific funding needs.

The government also offers free funding service to start off a business with the role of economic growth in a specific area and one that provides jobs for people in the area in places where unemployment rate is very high.

It is important you remember that you should not change the idea of your business plan in order to receive any type of government grants. It is often good to stick to what you have planned because you can receive proper funding and you will also be able to carry on things the way you wished.

Apart from the government there are also private organizations that can help you with free funding or personal grants for your business projects. The main purpose of this personal grant is to solve your personal debts and other needs and also to establish a new business in areas that most need the community business.

Small Business Start Up - Why not now?

by Mark Bergman

Today we find the country and indeed the entire world plunged into an economic meltdown. We all feel the effects of this meltdown in various ways. These range from being let go and joining the ranks of the unemployed, to cutbacks in corporate bonuses, perks and spending, and to feeling overwhelmed by an increasing personal debt load. The general feeling out there is that we all have lost control of our financial destinies. One answer to getting back on track may be to start up a small business of your own.

The government has boasted of pumping billions of dollars into the private sector in the form of a variety of stimulus packages. Now may be the time to use the current downturn and the willingness of the government to get the economy restarted at any cost to your own advantage. There are a number of programs and government institutions that are only too happy to help the small business owner get started. What better way to add extra income in either a part time small business or even full time, leaving the uncertainty of job insecurity behind for good.

Revenues from small businesses account for more than half the income earned in the USA today and many of the business giants of today like Disney and General Electric started up during previous recessions. So this has certainly been done successfully many times before.

There are many opportunities that are available right now. At the moment many businesses are not looking out for their potential competition and they are not being that innovative and creative. They are bloated and not very efficient after the excesses of the last few years. Many are going through round after round of cost cutting, and are not able to move quickly.

A lot of costs associated with new business startups are really low right now. Rents have dropped dramatically, and there are a large number of rental vacancies all over the country, and very likely in your own area. Wages of the last few years are also lower. So if you need to hire people from the very beginning, the expectation of your workers as far as wages are concerned, will be a lot lower. Also now is a great time to be able to negotiate and get fantastic prices for most goods and services that you may need in your new business.

Also big business is scaling back in the scope of work that they were doing over the last while. They are getting back to their core business by doing only what they do best, by removing those parts of their businesses that do not fit into their main focus. The dropping of these non-core business functions offer huge opportunities for smaller specialist companies to step in and provide these goods and services, to the public and even to the very companies themselves that dropped them. A good example may be computer services that were once done in house and are now performed by a small specialist company.

They say that necessity is the mother of invention. New industries are starting to emerge from this downturn, in all sorts of areas around the country. More and more people are now more conscious about the Environment and becoming less dependent on foreign oil. This will become increasingly more important for the USA. This is just one area where the number of opportunities will explode over the next few years.

So, why not get in at the ground floor? The rewards that success brings are pretty clear for all to see too.

New Business Funding Start Up Grants

Starting a new business is the dream of many people across the United States. However, with the current economic climate, it has become a tad bit more difficult than it used to be. Many potential business owners are scared out of starting their own business for one reason or another. They don't have enough cash in reserves, they can't get approved for a business loan, or any number of other reasons. While these are all viable reasons to stand on the sidelines, there is another alternative to overcome these excuses. Government grants can help you overcome the difficulties of starting a new business.

While most people are aware of grants, they really don't even consider them in most cases. They think that they are unattainable or something that only certain people can get. In actuality, they are available to anyone as long as you know where to look. So where can you find grants that help you with your new business? There are a few different places to look. Let's look a little more in depth on this topic.

The Federal government is the best place to look for grants. You can check out their website at grants.gov. On this website, they list all of the available federal grants in the near future. They'll have all kinds of information and categories to look in. You'll find the requirements that it takes to qualify as well as the amount of money that they're considering granting to the winner. In addition to that, you can download the necessary applications that you'll need to fill out for the grant proposal.

In addition to the Federal government, state governments have a number of grants available that can help new businesses. They aren't nearly as numerous as the Federal government, but it will give you a few more options to consider.

In general, these grants tend to be given to non-profit organizations or those affiliated with them. Therefore, it is probably to your advantage to become affiliated with one or start your own. This increases your chances of receiving a grant exponentially.

These grants are not usually designed to cover living expenses that you will incur during the grant period. As a rule, they are pretty much designed to help you complete a certain project. Beyond that you either have to figure it out on your own or apply for living expenses at govbenefits.gov.

When you're applying for a grant, make sure that you fit all of the criteria before you waste your time writing a grant proposal. It can be a lot of work, and you want to make sure that you're eligible before you start it. For example, if the grant you're looking at is only available in Maine and you live in Florida, you better not waste your time on it. Make sure you read the criteria thoroughly before you get involved.

Overall, grants for new businesses are a great tool that can help you out immensely. If you have been putting off starting your own business because of the money, you might want to look into grants. They are an often overlooked alternative that can really make a difference.

Small Business Grants

By Thomas Morva

Working capital grants by commercial banks represent the most important source for financing current assets. A firm seeking small business grants is required to submit an appropriate application form. There are different types of application forms for different categories of grants. The information furnished in the application covers, inter alia, the following: the name and address of the borrower and his establishment; the details of the borrowers business; and the nature and amount of security offered.

The application form has to be supported by various ancillary statements like the financial statements and financial projections of the firm. The application is then processed by the financial institution giving grant. This primarily involves an examination of the factors like ability, integrity and experience of the borrower in the particular business. General prospects of the borrowers business, purpose of grant, and requirement of the borrower and its reasonableness is also taken into perspective.

Once the application is duly processed, it is put up for sanction to the appropriate authority. If the sanction is given by the appropriate authority along with the sanction of grant, the bank specifies the terms and conditions applicable to the grant. These usually cover the amount of loan or the maximum limit of the grant, the nature of the grant, the period for which the grant will be valid, the rate of interest applicable to the grant, the primary security to be charged, the insurance of the security, the details of collateral security, if any, to be provided, and the margin to be maintained.

It is a common banking practice to incorporate important terms and conditions on a stamped security document to be executed by the borrower. This helps the bank to create the required charge on the security offered and also obligates the borrower to observe the stipulated terms and conditions.

Do Small Business Grants Even Exist?

By Rhonda Winn

The idea of obtaining a small business grant, for many small business
owners, is great. After all, unlike a loan, grants are funds that don't
have to be repaid. Many of us have heard various sources proclaiming to
have the secret to obtaining small business grants and they may very
well have a legitimate listing of grantors (organizations or
individuals that award funds to others for a specific purpose). But if
you don't know the real deal about small business grants you may be
wasting your time and your money.

The allure of these so-called small business grants is understandable.
Small business owners are always looking for ways to minimize their
financial risk so why not try to get a grant? But there is a lot of
hype out there, especially via the Internet. This could leave grant
seekers scrambling and disillusioned. But the fact is grants do exist.
The hype comes in when people start spreading the myth that there is
this catchall fund for any business owner looking to obtain some extra
money. That is just not the case. It's not as easy as filling out an
application and you get a check in the mail. You could get turned down.
Your business may not meet the criteria. Or worse, you might have had
difficulty even finding a grantor.

First, let's take a look at what type of grants are available. In
general, a grant covers the costs for work or supplies for a given
period of time such as a grant renewable for two years. And they are
typically meant to fund acts or services that improve social
conditions, education, community or aid religious or cultural functions
in specific areas.

1. Grants to individuals usually for research or education.

2. Grants to for-profit businesses. These are not as numerous as
non-profit organizations or non-profit businesses so almost all
for-profit business grants come from government agencies. Check out
your local agencies for additional details.

There are literally billions of dollars of grant money awarded each
year. The people awarded this money have done a considerable amount of
background work. Many of the people who seek out grants, or "grant
seekers", have professional grant writers to research and write grant
proposals. Grant seekers must research companies and agencies first to
find out what they have to offer that fits the grantor's specifications.

It's important to realize that many grants that are available cannot be
awarded to small businesses because in many cases, a small business is
operating for a profit. Foundations cannot give grants to for-profit
businesses because they get a special tax exemption that renders this
illegal. Knowing that little fact will give you realistic expectations
when seeking out grant funds.

Common Grantors

  • U. S. government through a variety of agencies

  • Corporations

  • Foundations

  • Charities

Grant Seekers Awarded Funds

  • Non-profit businesses or organizations

  • Schools

  • Churches

Businesses that meet the specific criteria of the grantor in regards to location, ownership, services, or employees.

Your chances of obtaining grants for your business dramatically
increase if you have a non-profit organization. A common misconception
is that non-profit organizations don't make money but this is not the
case at all it just means that you operate solely to pay wages,
vendors, and purchase necessities. At the end of the year you should
break even. So if you have an idea that could improve the lives of
others through social works than you could possibly find a grant to
help you reach your goal.

If you have a small business and need help getting started then be
prepared for the challenges ahead. Finding grants may not be easy but
they are out there. Checking with local government agencies is the best
place to start. There are local small grants in some cities that are
available if you either operate your business in certain areas or your
business will benefit particular areas.

Whichever type of business you operate, be diligent in your search and
make sure you have read the grantor's requirement carefully. With
enough effort, you can have money for your business and reduce your own
personal risk of starting a business.

Government Business Grants

By Eric Morris

Starting a business, whether home based or not, can be very difficult especially if you need the necessary cash. Raising enough funds to finance a business is an arduous undertaking for many entrepreneurs. Even if you are planning only a shoestring budget for your business, you will still need a working capital to build your inventory, purchase equipment, pay registration fees, and maybe even buy or rent a space. There are a number of ways for an entrepreneur to raise the necessary capital including personal savings, bank loans, venture capitalist and even family and friends.

One excellent option is to find an excellent government business grant. Government grants is defined as assistance in the form of cash that the federal government provides especially for individuals and businesses that are in need of financial assistance. There are over 900 grant program from 26 government grant-making agencies. The federal government is ready to provide nearly $400 billion in grants through these programs.

If you want to avail of free government business grants then you need to locate a program that provides grants to start up businesses. Some grant programs will offer free business consultation services and loans. Most states will offer grants what will be directly awarded to a business, especially one that has the potential to hire scores of people.

The government is more than willing to help out businesses especially with the economic condition that still remains volatile and unpredictable and with the need for more economic development. Despite the perception of most Americans not to look towards the government for help, the fund that the Federal government can provide remains unbelievably vast. You can avail of your share of these grants. You can look up more information about government business grants through grants.gov, the official Web site for Federal Government Grants.

Business Grants for Women

By Rebecca Game

Many women in business find that in order to meet their business' financial needs, they turn to searching out a loan source. Business loans for women are widely available through the Small Business Administration and a variety of other sources such as banks, credit unions and other financial institutions. Loans, however, are not the only source for financing. In some instances, business grants for women are available.

Business grants for women are a wonderful option for some women in business. Grants are an excellent source of funding because grants are not repaid. The funding is provided through government resources that have been budgeted for specific needs in our national community. Anyone is open to apply, so business grants for women are available to anyone regardless of gender, race, religion, or background.

The downside of grants is that business grants for women are not widely available. Rather, business grants for women are available only to select businesses and under very strict circumstances, mostly for research or development. Technologically-focused businesses, for example, will find it much easier to qualify for a grant than a craft or retail business. Still, because the money is readily available, even if your business is retail oriented, it may be of benefit to check into business grants for women available for various resources that could assist you in your business.

According to Denouement Solutions and Grants.gov, the United States government and its government organizations offer more 1000 grants totaling more than $400 billion in grant funding every year. Only 10 percent of citizens that qualify for these grants actually apply for grants, despite the fact that many more than that would qualify for a business grant for women. Therefore, even though not every individual or business is eligible for a business grant for women, it certainly can be beneficial to check into business grants for women.

According to grants.gov, the United States government's web site and main resource for grants that are available and can be applied for, there are more than 1000 grant programs offered by the 26 Federal grant-making agencies. These programs fall into 21 different categories, as defined by the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance. While some agencies may list available grants under multiple grant categories, the Federal government lists these categories of grants as follows:

- Agriculture

- Art

- Business and Commerce

- Community Development

- Consumer Protection

- Disaster Prevention and Relief

- Education

- Employment, Labor, and Training

- Energy

- Environmental Quality

- Food and Nutrition

- Health

- Housing

- Humanities

- Information and Statistics

- Law, Justice, and Legal Service

- Natural Resources

- Regional Development

- Science and Technology

- Social Services and Income Security

- Transportation

Even though the category of Business and Commerce may be what appears to have the largest selection of resources for business grants for women, consider the other categories as well, according to where your business falls. For example, if your business is a restaurant, don't hesitate to check the Food and Nutrition category for grants currently available. If your business is a farm, check the Agriculture section.

Grants aren't available for starting or opening a new business, and they also aren't available for expanding on an existing business. However, business grants for women can offer funding for research or development of the business. Many grants may not be applicable to your particular business or needs, but there may be funds available for research, education, or other things needed for you to operate and improve your business to help you achieve business growth.

In general, when considering the options for a business grant for women, do your homework and read carefully. Look at all grants available that might be related to your particular business. Consider looking into the Business and Commerce section, of Grants.gov, as mentioned, and also look into the different categories of grant fundings. Take the time needed to read the grant qualifications carefully. With any business, check into the Regional Development category, as well as the Community Development category. Depending on your location within the United States, it's possible to qualify for a grant to economically develop certain areas, and expanding a business in one of these areas can possibly assist you in qualifying for a business grant for women.

Additionally, consider applying for an educational grant if returning to school is an option you'd like to consider. Many grants for higher education are offered each year, and not all are awarded. Knowledge is an extremely valuable business tool, and because the money is readily available for those who qualify, and educational grant is an excellent option to consider as a business grant for women.

Contact the specific government agency offering the grant for tips, information, and to ask questions before submitting your application.

Grabbing Your Business Start Up Grant Money

If you are trying to start a business it is important to know that there are many options out there for you to take advantage of in order to get the money you need. Everyone needs a little help to get started and this is where the assistance of grant money comes into play. There are many stipulations and rules that generally apply when a person is applying for a grant. Because of this it is very important that you read through everything completely so that you are not missing a thing.

An application for a grant whether it is a Federal, State, or Local grant, that has missing information or was filled out incorrectly could cost you your chance at obtaining any money from that particular grant. Be sure to take your time filling out all of the various grants that you apply for. If you find yourself confused make sure that you are getting some help for it all. There is nothing wrong with asking for a little assistance, especially since so much is riding on you getting accepted for grant money.

The first place you will want to start is the Federal grants. There are numerous to look through and they are being updated all of the time. Even though you may have missed a few good looking grants because of an expiration date, do not fear because new ones are available all of the time. Federal grants can be used by organizations and non-profit organizations. While there are grants available, there tends to be more loans offered then anything else.

Something to keep in mind is that Federal grants are not the perfect solution for everybody. This is primarily because Federal grants are not generally given to individuals. Of course there are exceptions, just as there is to every rule. But Federal grant money given to individuals is always the exception and never the rule.

Another kind of grants that you may want to look into is that of State grants. Each state has their own grants that they are willing to offer people of their state. State grants help get people back into school or to complete some additional training that is needed in order to start their own business. Generally these State grants are given to students attending college who are at the low to middle class income status.

While State grants will help people attend school or training in order to become prepared to open their own business, these grants are not generally available for the start-up costs associated with opening up a new business. A person cannot typically get a State grant to rent or purchase a building or to market your business through advertising. Of course, just like with the Federal grants, there are exceptions.

The exception is if your business is going to be placed in an economically depressed area. Hiring local people who are going to work for you may qualify you for a State grant as your business will help that economically depressed are get back on its feet. In this type of situation, a State grant being given for start-up costs is a win-win situation for everyone from the owner, to the townspeople, to the State government.

As if the Federal and State grants were not enough to look through, there are also Local grants that you may be able to apply for if your business is going to be a local organization, either non-profit or a foundation of some sorts. If your city or the nearest one to you has an Economic Development Council then you may be able to seek assistance from them. Some of these various grants are specially geared for women or minorities. Other times the Local grants are focused on businesses that will be able to bring in plenty of new jobs to their economically depressed area.

You generally will not find help from Local grants if this is for an individual business and its start-up costs. Since these grants are most likely geared towards non-profit organizations, for-profit corporations are unlikely to receive much help. This does not mean there would not be an exception but it is not something that you will want to count on.

Find Funding To Start Your Own Business - Get Grant Money Or A Loan

Find Funding

Once you have a great idea for a business, and after putting it down in writing in a business plan, you see that it can make money. The next step is to find funding to get the business started. If you have personal savings you can use, then you are all set to go. However, most people look for funding from two main sources: loans and grants.

Loans

Loans are funds that will need to be paid back to the lender. There are also loan guarantees available for new businesses, where if you default on the loan the government agency agrees to pay the loan back. You can find loans and loan guarantees for businesses at the Small Business Administration. The SBA doesn't offer grants for small business start-up purposes, but it does offer to guarantee their loan programs that you can access through a private or other institution www.sba.gov. One excellent program that they offer is a loan pre-qualification program. Before you head off to a bank asking them for money, the SBA will use an "intermediary" to go over your loan application and help you make it stronger. Then it is submitted to the SBA, and if they like it they will write you a letter of pre-qualification, essentially saying that they will guarantee your loan. Then the intermediary will help you find a lender and get the best rates on the loan. Then off you go to the lender with your spiffy loan application and letter of pre-qualification, thereby improving your chances of getting the loan.

So let's say that you have begun your new business and it is really taking off. It is time to expand the business, and that also takes money. The SBA could be a resource for you, depending on who you are and what your business entails, because they also guarantee loans to grow your business. If you are a woman or a military veteran-business owner, or your business is located in an area that the government is trying to revitalize, for just a couple of many examples, then you might qualify for this type of loan. For more information go to www.sba.gov and look under "SBA Loans."

Loans may not have been the first source on your list of financing options for your new business because they must be repaid, but sometimes they offer the best solution to your money needs to get the business up and running. There tends to be more loans rather than grants available for business start-up costs, so this bears keeping in mind also, depending on what your financial purpose for the funding is.

Grants

Grants are funds that are given to you outright, and you do not have to pay them back. Generally speaking, you will likely find more grants with awards available for starting or growing a small business on the state and local level rather than the federal level. One informative place to start looking for state and local grants is your state's Economic Development Council. They usually will have a search engine, so type in "grants" and you will likely be surprised at how many offerings come up. You will also notice that some grants are for businesses, while others are for funding city projects, for example. Every grant is different, and has different eligibilities and requirements, so this is a stage where you will need to spend a bit of time reading to see what all is available. Some grants are made available to non-profit corporations. As you read about different grants, you will discover that if your business is a non-profit, or if you as an individual are affiliated with a non-profit organization, there will be several grants for which you will be eligible, more so than if your business is a for-profit corporation. You might even want to look into forming a non-profit corporation yourself.

There are many grants available, and the first step to success with obtaining a grant is knowing where to look for it. The next chapter will go into more detail about grants at the federal, state and local levels, so you will know where to begin your search to access essentially free money, and what it can and cannot be used for.
